48 people turned up to enjoy the 4th edition of the Silverstream Spin. It has been suggested we rename it to ‘Mud, Sweat and Tears’ but that might have been taken… it’s still appropriate. The weather was muggy, the trails were slippery, the arses were muddy, the coffee was strong, the sausages were tasty, the bonfire was roaring, and the smiles were wide.
Of the 48 people, 25 finished and 23 people DNFed.
Sebastian Potgieter took out the top prize by rolling a 3, then a 3, then a 1. This was nice consolation as he only got 3rd after a mammoth mission during peak bagging the week before and still has frostbite in 3 fingers.
Gretchen Brownstein won the coveted Tin Bum award for the person that ran the least without winning. She rolled 3, 1 and 2. Interestingly, every year the person that has rolled the least has not managed to be first home!
Chris Holmes ran the most with around 60k and over 4k of vert. He rolled a 4, 1 and 1 but decided to reject the second 1 and spun a 7. He finished at 8:46pm looking happy.
Another happy camper was Fran Harris who flew down from Nelson for the fun. She rolled a 1, then a 6 but rejected it and spun a 7. She finished that in just under 7 hours so had enough time to roll and run a 3 and become one of the finishers! That’s how to get your money’s worth! Her only regret was she still hasn’t done Powder Ridge – see you next year, Fran!
A dozen or so remained into the night to enjoy the BBQ, bonfire and great company. Sadly, Tim left his chocolate behind. After vainly trying to call him back, we ate it.
I haven’t worked out any averages but here’s a breakdown for how the dice rolled, the wheel spun and the were trails run:[1]
1 – rolled 14, spun 4, run 17
2 – rolled 23, spun 1, run 20
3 – rolled 23, spun 2, run 24
4 – rolled 17, spun 4, run 16
5 – rolled 13, spun 4, run 10
6 – rolled 13, spun 3, run 7
7 – spun 3, run 3

Final tally is yet to come in but it looks like we will have over $800 to donate to Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust. That’s double what we raised last year!
Thanks to all those who turned up, gave some koha, and helped make it a great day!
[1] Everyone has 1 chance to reject their dice roll and spin the wheel instead. The wheel has loops 1 to 6 as well as loop 7 and a ‘prize’ option in which people get a spot prize and get to choose their lap.
