Silverstream Spin 2023

At least 57 runners participated in the 3rd edition of the Silverstream Spin on Oct 7th.

Robert Soper took out the win by rolling a 1, then a 1, then a 1! He decided on this 3rd roll to do the honourable (and less boring) thing and tried his luck by spinning the Wheel. He got a 4 and won anyway. The slacker still only ran 35km with about 1050m of vert but he did smash it out in 4hours and 7 minutes!

Lydia Patillo was the first woman home after rolling a 1, then a 4, then another 4. Roughly 44k with 1600m vert. She had a time limit of 6 hours before she had to leave to pick up the kids and she finished 6 hours and 4 minutes still looking fresh!

We have a special Tin Bum award for the person who runs the least (in 3 rolls) but doesn’t win. Two teams and 1 solo runner run only around 28km with 1200m of vert by rolling a 1, a 2, and a 3. Mike Simpson was the first of these home in a time of 4 hours 41 minutes so he deserves the prize.

The last person standing award was closely contested by Sally Nicoll and Tim Bilton. Sally spun the Wheel on her second roll and was elated to score a 7. She set off on that loop at 10:37am and returned about 9 hours later and wisely chose to DNF. Tim rolled and ran a 4, then a 6 and at 6pm rolled another 4. He set off and returned just before the 9pm to claim the prize having also gone the longest distance of 61km with about 2800m (also the most distance and vert he had ever run).

Here’s some stats (thanks to Matt, our statistician):

Out of 112 rolls

  • 1 – 23%
  • 2 – 21%
  • 3 – 17%
  • 4 – 12%
  • 5 – 10%
  • 6 – 13%

Unfortunately these numbers don’t take into account when someone rejected their roll and spun the Wheel instead. With that in mind you would expect it to be skewed to the lower end… or perhaps our dice are rigged and we need to use some different ones next year!

Counting team members that dropped out during the day we had a roughly 50% DNF rate.

It was Chris’s turn as Dice Master this year. He was also admin and barista and chef so it was a bit crazy! Great job Chris!

Personally, my first roll was a 6 which I rejected and so spun the Wheel to get a 2. My second loop was a 1 and then my luck ran out as I rolled a 6. So it was still early in the day when I set off on the 6, my third loop, with Ella, also on her last loop. We caught up with Hamish and Paul (on their second loop) and hung out with them for a few hours. The time passed quite nicely as we discussed the advantages of trail running over golf and lawn bowls (among other things, less people die trail running), the words of Kum Ba Ya (apparently ‘kum ba ya’ is Latin for ‘reflector’. Hamish knows these things – he’s Catholic), brain scans of pathological liars and the essential evolutionary purpose of deception. We also got stuck in mud and teased Hamish and Paul about how much we were going to enjoy stopping at the end of this loop!

It was a lovely day – I only actually travelled 42km with 2000m vert and it took me 6 hours and 47 minutes. Enough time left to enjoy a beer or two.

Around 20 people hung around for food and drink around the bonfire. An inflatable pig was seen and Hamish did a really good Britney Spears impersonation – Hit me baby one more time! For some reason, that seemed appropriate.

The next morning 8 of us went on another group run to check out the Pig Route used in Pigs Backyard Ultra.
